Which aircraft was most popular for barnstorming after the war? ›

The golden age of barnstorming began after World War I. The war left the U.S. with newly trained pilots eager to keep flying, and a surplus of military aircraft sold at bargain prices. The Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" training airplane was the quintessential barnstormer's plane -- cheap, durable, and easy to operate.

The pilot or team of aviators would then land at a local farm (hence the name "barnstorming") and negotiate with the farmer for the use of one of his fields as a temporary runway from which to stage an air show and offer airplane rides to customers.

So, just what is a “barnstormer”? In short, a pilot who traveled across the country, performing aerial stunts and offering joy rides for a price in an airplane. Also known as “Gypsy Pilots,” they often traveled alone within a territory.

Since 2014, however, it has been in the services of little Nolinor Aviation, based in Mirabel, a suburb of Montreal, which serves a handful of domestic destinations using a fleet of 18 aircraft. At 49.7 years, it is, according to the database of Airfleets.net, the world's oldest passenger plane still in service.

Barnstorming was a short-lived commercial venture. Within ten years of the end of combat, these daring and experienced pilots were being regulated out of business. Flying safety rules and the market crash of 1929 put most barnstormers out of business. The era of the barnstormer was over.

Along with the perils of navigating the foggy Atlantic, Lindbergh's biggest challenge during his transatlantic flight was simply staying awake. Between his pre-flight preparations and the 33.5-hour journey itself, he went some 55 hours without sleep.
